Talking about thanks. A huge thank you to Lissy Lou ( and the two little boys). I recently won her giveaway, and it arrived this week! So, so exciting to get a parcel through the post. As I gazed at the parcel in my hands I thought of Lissy carefully packing  and wrapping. Lissy going and posting it. I imagine her local post office. I imagine her day, her life, how the world is for her.  This parcel that already , before I have even opened it, has connected me to this lovely thoughtful lady in another part of the country whom I have never met in person.  May I tell you it cheered my heart!  Do you know what? On the brown paper parcel, Lissy had written...Brown paper packages tied up with string! Isn't that lovely? I thought to myself, isn't this just so special.  Wonderful! Go and visit her, she is lovely!

Inside I found these lovely little framed prints ( And yes I do agree Lissy Lou, they would look lovely painted white!).....

And this charming pot bear candle snuffler, which unbeknown to Lissy is just so right, as I had a similar one that belonged to my Dad, which got broken, so It reminds me of him!.......

These lovely incense sticks, complete with tiny holder, which are gorgeous.......

A very lovely and very handy (for me!) needlecase in red (love red! still haven't got over looking down at my new red shoes when I was a child! Bumping into lamp posts!!  Red still makes me happy!),  thank you Lissy Lou for placing two lovely pins in it too!!!......

A bookmark. Now Lissy, how did you know that I had just started reading a very thick book. Just the ticket!.....

Some Emma Bridgewater tissues! How timely! I have had a stinking cold all week, I don't know what I have, but it is not nice. This is the second week! I have been poorly, and so there is only two tissues left to photograph! I held these back, so I could show both sides! What a martyr!!!

So Lissy Lou, thank you so much, I loved your parcel and goodies. You have warmed my heart with your kindness!

I don't know about all of you, but I do enjoy receiving gifts, I do! But, I so, so, so love giving even more!   Especially hand made gifts! Obviously, I hope that my home made goodies don't look like something made in Blue Peter! One thing for sure though is that each stitch I make is filled with love, care and thoughts for the person who will receive it. I am saddened by the commercialism and materialisticness of Christmas these days and more and more I am of the mind that handmade gifts should make a serious comeback!

Found this on the internet, so funny I thought!

We seem to live in a world where it is how much money something costs rather than the thought that has gone into it. Down with materialism, thats what I say! Now where did I put my sandwich board and soap box!!!

One of the many many films which I enjoy to watch is Little women.

I love all the versions of it including the latest one with Susan Sarandon. I had the book when I was a child, and a couple of years ago I was taken by my husband George to see it at the Grand Theatre. Our poor son Tom came along too, and pulled faces all the way through, but secretly I think he liked it!!!

What a heart warming tale full of selfless giving and simple living. It reflects a time when people were happy to receive a hand embroidered hankerchief and appreciated the love and care which went into the making of it too. A world where people gave their time and care to each other, and there wasn't a price tag on everything! Oh, I do realise that it is a rose coloured spectacled view of the good old days, but if only it were just a little bit more like?! Perhaps I have been watching too many old movies. But I love them!

It's a Wonderful Life! What a wonderful thought!

Years ago, there was a program on the telly called Crackerjack. I watched it when we were in this country. One of the prizes, perhaps the main prize even, was a Crackerjack pencil and the booby prize was a cabbage!

Can you see the boy on the left holding a cabbage!!! I jest you not!

Can you imagine children's reactions these days to getting such a prize!! (What the....!)  I used to dream about winning a Crackerjack pencil!!! I can but dream!

Well with Christmas sneaking up on us, I find myself yet again dreaming of not only a white Christmas, but one with some good old fashioned values. One where we can all get excited about the small things as if we had never seen them before! A jolly cosy Christmas by the fire admiring our hand sewn hankerchiefs, tea cosys, tray cloths and goodies.  Personally if I got hand embroidered goodies at Crimbo I would be in heaven!

Handmade....it really does touch my heart!

I am very excited about next weeks post! It will be on thursday the 22nd, and its the Cath Kidston party! Come and join the fun, click the picture below for more details at Lissy Lou's blog! As Lissy says It can be CK inspired and you don't need to have the real Mccoy!

As I sit here looking out of the window my Owl tree is rapidly snowing leaves!  I will go to the front door and take a snap!

Before I go!  I have posted on a thursday this week, because I want to say happy birthday to a friend, who I know will read this, but is having difficulty posting a comment at the moment!

So......HAPPY BIRTHDAY RO!!!!    Hope you have a wonderful day!

                                            SO true hey Ro!!!!

Until next time all of you, I wish you all many blessings and love!

  2. Hi there Suzie,

Hope you get better soon you poor thing. The girls had the lurgy that last week and they both still have nasty coughs too! Me and DH have avoided it thus far............

What lovely gifts you received, lucky you! those pictures are lovely arent they.

I agree with you about christmas but here is a thing, A few years ago whilst talking to MIL during the run up to christmas the same conversation came about, about christmas and commercialism etc. She and DH's Dad found really old newspapers back when they lived "up North" lol dated in I think 1890's, in one there was this article or letter sent to the paper about how much pressure there was about christmas and how commercialised it was! wow so people that over a 100 years ago. Quite amazing really.

But all that said me and DH have agreed not too much plastic fanstatic toys this year for our girls. (although we shall see) But I do intend to make a few gifts for our girls this year, as I so want them to appreicate the simple things in life as well as the spectacular!

Hope you are feeling well soon.

  3. Hiya Suzie :)
Sorry to hear of your red nose! It's awful isn't it; you know every time you blow that eventually it's going to be sore but a good blow is worth the pain, blowing ones snout when one is full of a cold is a must! Hope it gets better soon.
What wonderful gifts! So much nicer in brown paper. I wrap all my Christmas gifts in brown paper and add a ribbon and some beads and I'm always surprised by the reaction; people love it :)
I totally agree with your points about a handmade Christmas. I've been making gifts again this year but I always feel I have to pop something else in that's been bought so as not to disappoint! Silly I know, but I guess that's the way the world has gone.
Brilliant film is Little Women and your other movie mention; years ago when my husband and I hit a very rocky patch finantially, my sister lent us 'It's A Wonderful Life' and we felt so much better! Now whenever we are short my husband jokes with me 'Right babe, time to watch Wonderful Life again' :)
I hope your friend has a great birthday.
    Enjoy your weekend, Suzie. Xx

  4. Hi Ya'!!
What a wonderful post from unexpected gifts to old movies!
I think my fav Holiday movie is "A Christmas Story".... It reminds me of my childhood & when I look around in Ralphie's Mom's Kitchen I realize I have some of the same "stuff" as they were my Mom's & Grandma's!!
    Have a Great Day!!
    Hugs,
    Marilyn

  5. Hi Suzie, sorry you're poorly... I love Little women also, & I wish we lived the days of 'little house on the prairie' good old fashioned values!
I remember Stewpot on CrackerJack, we used to watch it every week!! Get better soon. XXX

  6. I’m so glad you posted on a Thursday; I don’t have to wait until I get back from camping to read your lovely post! I agree with your sentiments about gift giving and commercialism, if only there were more brown paper packages tied up with string! I read Little Women as a child too, but don’t think I have ever seen a movie of it. My Mum did make me watch The Sound of Music every year though so I will never forget the brown paper packages line!
I love that little glimpse out you front door. Do you really get owls in that tree?
I hope you feel better soon, I have my fingers crossed my cold has disappeared when I wake so I can really enjoy camping.

  9. Aw dear, get well soon and what a lovely post... I too am making gifts and its sad to say I think my brothers, sister in Laws and nieces and nephew "won't get it!" they will just think me cheap and mad... but I am not either and I have decided that I don't care.. its the thought that counts.

I too love old films and especially musicals with lots of toe tapping dancing...

    take care

  17. I do so love reading your blog. What great gifts you recieved from Lissy Lou! I adore those tissue! Those have to make you smile no matter how bad you feel.

I agree about the materialism of Christmas. I think so much of the holiday stress would be relieved if people would just learn to appreciate the people instead of the money end of it. I love the old holiday movies too. They just give me such a warm feeling inside.

I hope you have a great week, Suzie, and feel better soon!

Oh, how the little parcels make your heart go pitter patter! Friends in blogland are just the best.

Thanks so much for visiting me yesterday..it's so true in that everyone in the world has been affected by this economic misery...I prefer handmade and support all the creative people that are selling supplies to enable us to make the *handmade*...

I'll soon be selling my goods...my inventory overflows! I've had it on delay for several years due to many life changes but I'm finally settled for good now!

    Have a lovely day,

  25. Oh Suzie I hope you nose stops annoying you soon. I'm not sure I could have used those tissues, I'm funny like that! But what's the point in keeping things new? It's a bit like candles, always struggled with lighting those too.

Love Little Women too. Must get that for the girls. They love all the old ones.

Now that little cross stitch is such a laugh. Imagine having that hanging in the house! Think the girls would hide it!!

Your parcel sounded so lovely before you even opened it. What a lovely message on the front, from another of my favourite movies.

  26. I'm just happy as a lark to read your blog and have you come to mine. You are such a lucky ducky to be on the receiving end of all those treasures!
Yes, Homemade is so important. Another thing I think is really important is hand written letters and cards in the mail. It seems with the fast paced world of computers a hand wrote letter still makes our heart sing. I'll be back to you this weekend for sure!

  30. Hey there little Suzie girl, I am soooooooooooo sorry you are still sniffling and such. Your post hits the nail right on the head with the whole world thinking the only things with value are those that cost the most. So untrue isn't it. Your parcel of goodies were indeed little treasures to keep and admire for a long long time and Ro will certainly love here little stitching you did. I appreciate all your warm and loving comments as if they were parcels that had arrived in the mail as I feel they are from your heart. Hope you have a weekend full of blessings and joy. Love ya, Mollye

  39. Hi Suzie - checking in from my hotel room at the moment! :) Congratulations on your award! You truly deserve it. I'm so sorry to hear you are still not well - the colds going around have been so very nasty. "Little Women" is one of my favorite movies as well as being one of my favorite books. :) I DO love giving away goodies - especially homemade goodies. I feel there is a higher appreciation value because everything was made with love and care. I plan on giving away something again next month!!! Maybe even a "package" of goodies to help ring in the season of giving.
And Suzie - thank you so much for your kind words on my last blog post...they meant the world to me.

  45. So sorry you're not feeling well. I'm praying I don't catch anything this year. They put up hand sanitizer dispensers everywhere at work and I'm using those and not shaking hands with people, etc..

I LOVE Little Women and have that DVD in my collection right now. Of course, I'm a lover of classic books and movies in general.

We've done handmade Christmas for the last two years and we love it!

  48. You are so right about handmade gifts-they truly are the best kind. When my daughter was 4 she made me a heart out of fabric scraps, bits of ribbon and buttons-all sewn together in one big jumble-but I love it dearly.
She and I both love reading your posts, and the bit about the booby prize cabbage had us laughing till we cried!
I hope you (and your poor little nose) are all better soon. xo
