Hello to all you fine peeps! Happy October! Did you remember to say White wabbits? I always say it!
This was a picture from last October, and I grew my own pumpkin, this year not one of my seeds germinated! No Pumpkins! Boo hoo!
Well its that time of the year again ( I know, already! :0). Time to look towards cosy nights by the fire, bonfires, fireworks, and then of course to top it all off with the cherry on the top........... CHRISTMAS!!! There, I said it.....CHRISTMAS!!!
ooooooh Yummy! And next thing you know its.........
Now, I am no Grinch, I love Christmas, all the sentimentality, nostalgia, sparkle and glitter. BUT! This year I am getting out my sandwich board and going on a protest march! Why? Because each year that goes by, I despair at how it has all become so materialistic and driven by commercialism. People run about like headless chickens spending money that they can ill afford, and instead of getting the desired Christmas that we are told we should be getting by the media, all that a lot of us get is worry and one huge headache and painful bills to match!
I yelled out last year that I longed for a long ago type of Christmas, the sort where people happily exchange a gift that has been lovingly hand-made. You know the sort, like in 'Little Women', where a face would light up at an embroidered handkerchief, as if it were a precious treasure they were looking upon. Eyes filled with the wonder of each stitch being sewn by someone who loved them.
SO! This year I have made a vow to myself, that where ever possible, I will be making gifts for my much loved family and friends with fabric and materials which I already have in the house. After all, I am a hoarder, and after last weeks post where I was confined to my workroom (what a hardship!), I started to look through all those pretty fabrics which I have been collecting over time, and thought....hmmmmmm!? Obviously this is not a completely achievable goal, as I don't think my brother would be too excited about a pretty smelly heart or bird, etc! Although it is good for men to let their feminine side loose sometimes!
This week, whilst confined to my sewing room, I started on some of these, which I will loosely stuff and fill with lavender nearer to Christmas, and of course finish them off with bright beady button eyes! .......
I personally would be extremely happy and content, and filled with sheer warm happiness if I pulled off the chrissie wrapping paper to discover a handmade with love gift! That would mean more to me than any expensive shop bought gift. I would rather have something unique and loved than any diamond or trinket that has no substance other than cost. This is to me what Christmas should be about. Simple but true comforts and love.
Oh, and before I go, I am so daft sometimes! Last week I announced the winner of my drawing, ( who was chosen randomly by drawing numbers out of a hat) and then completely forgot to tell you the name of Aunt Spicy's beautiful scottie doglet! What am I like? Well the little dogs name is Fred (Freddie)! Thank you Mummy Boo Bear for your suggestion! Fred (Freddie is liking his new name very much! Mind you I have still not decided whether said dog is a girl or a boy yet. What do you think Aunty Spicy, after all, you created this gorgeous pooch! Either way, tis all good..... Fred, Freddie , Fredrica!
Getting back to christmas, what are your opinions on it these days, and if you are handcrafting gifts, what will/are you making? I would love to know, it would give me inspiration. Here is a difficult one... well it is for me! Anyone have any good ideas for handmade gifts for men? If you do, let me know PLEASE!!! ;0)
Have a wonderful week everyone!
Susie xxxx :0))))
Hi Susie,
ReplyDeleteReceiving one of your little birds would be a great gift!!!
I don't have any ideas for guy gifts :(
Each year I try to buy less. Hubby and I just do stockings for each other.
Just being together should be the "gift".
Deb
Fred/Fredette/Freddie...perfect fun name! Way to go Mummy Boo Bear!
ReplyDeleteS, I am dying over the cute birds...adorable!
Here Here! Well said. Last year I decided I wasn't going to go over the top & made lots of things......so much nicer! Your little dickie birds are perfect. My menfolk will be getting willy warmers this year!!! xxxxxx
ReplyDeleteMmh..just back from your wonderful country with a suitcase full of Christmas stuff..I don't think my tips could be useful, ha ha!
ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend!
Love your cute little birds!
xxxx
Love it all and am reminded, once again, of the excellent book 'Unplug the Christmas Machine', which takes your ideas and helps people actually put them to work!
ReplyDeleteThis year I INTEND to make scrapbooks of favourite photos for my parents and inlaws (learning Scrapbooking along the way) and embroidered hand pictures for each family - I got the idea here:
http://polka-dot-daze.blogspot.com/2010/09/my-creative-space_16.html
This will be a bit weepy as my mum is dying and it will be a bit of a last memory for us, but in a good way, I think.
Ben will contribute jams and chutneys and I may throw in a few thrifted French goodies for those who will appreciate them. But men are really so difficult, aren't they?
I didn't say " White Wabbits " but I did say & do " Pinch & a Punch for the first of the month " !
ReplyDeleteLast year I filled pretty lemonade bottles which had lovely ceramic stoppers ( once the lemonade was drunk ! ) with bubble bath & made pretty tags & labels. Thought I might do sloe gin this year.
I've seen some prettily covered soaps so thought I could do that.
One year - as we were on a special holiday on a boat in Antigua for Christmas we just exchanged gifts so that the four of us had two gifts each to open. The kids obviously had things to open from the famly when we got home but our gift excange was so special. We tried to do it by Secret Santa but that was a bit difficult with just for of us !
Love what you are making
Morning Suzie! I know what you mean, there are a ridiculous amount of adverts on for kids toys at the moment. Mr H and I have decided to have as homemade a Christmas as possible. We have a big outer family and as well as Christmas, have 12 family birthdays in the last two months of the year.
ReplyDeleteSo, i have been putting my thinking cap on with what I can make for whom and have made a small start. I actually think, like you, that many people are starting to appreciate the homemade more and the thought and time gone into it. My dad wants homemade chutneys and pickles, my mum wants a homemade scarf!
Here's to a HOMEMADE CHRISTMAS!!!!!!!!!!!
Have a Super Weekend!

Hear hear! Xxx
ReplyDeleteLike you, I'm becomming more and more frustrated with the commercialism of Christmas. I don't mind Santa bringing new stuff for the kids, but last year all the adults got cs gifts from me. I was really pleased with my hunting and my mum couldn't believe I'd found her pressie in a cs (wonderful caricature of an Old English Sheepdog - we used to have a real one). This year I'm making her a gift. Much more fun than the bun fight at the shops. xx
ReplyDeleteI couldn't agree more with you. The problem that I have is namely time and finding time to make stuff around working. But also it's that I want to give homemade things to people who will appreciate them, if I can spend the same amount of money and pick something up in a shop for someone who isn't going to care that you spent HOURS making them something then I'll do that. And men are just impossible to make things for I think!
ReplyDeleteI've now finished a crocheted blanket for a friend for Christmas and I'm working on one for my Mum. Will try and do little crafty things for the stitch and bitch girls and some other friends too. We'll see where I am in November!
Love those little lavender birds - I would be more than happy to get one of those as a present!
PS I got to see Florence and the Machine last year at the Freedom Festival, not this year. She's way too famous to be coming to Hull for free now!
ReplyDeleteI'm making homemade this year. I have a couple of tilda angels planned as gifts a large strawberry cushion and jams and chutney's already made just need labelling. Nearer the time I'm going to make some truffles and biscuits too. I'm sure whoever receives one of your lavender birds will love it. good luck with the xmas makes. xxx
ReplyDeleteI have been making home made Christmas presents for friends most of my adult life.
ReplyDeleteAs the years have gone by and I have got older, it seems to me that Christmas seems to lose more and more of its true meaning. I don't mean in the religious sense, I leave that for those so inclined. But it has become so materialistic. People get themselves into serious debt just to give their children what they all want, just to show off to friends and family as well. The debt so large that they often only just pay it off before starting all over again. Children are spoilt these days, what they want so many of them get, hardly surprising they have no respect for the value of things.
These days there are just two of us, we don't exchange gifts any more simply because we don't want for anything. We have no aspirations for jewellery, clothes, perfume, expensive gifts leave us cold. And those things we do want, we just buy when we can, when we see them. No point waiting for Christmas.
But I always make my own cards, have done since the early 80s, and these days, don't really 'do' Christmas, though we have greenery and candles, a small twig tree with home made hearts and stars and angels on it, and nice food. But again, no stocking up for a siege, just a few treats. And I have lots of fairy lights, inside and out.
Wow those birds are cute! I know I wouldnt be unhappy opening a beautiful stitchery or drawing made by your own fair hands! what a treat it would be.
ReplyDeleteI always find talk of commercialision of christmas interesting. My MIL once told us about very old newspapers that they had found in one of thier old houses in Liverpool. I think the newspaper was dated 1880-1890 somewhere around that time. So a long time ago! In it there was a letter from a lady complaining of the frantic christmas rush and how commercialised christmas had become. I wonder if she thought that back then what on earth she would make of it today!
I always believe that christmas should be what you make of it. I am currently making a crochet blanket for my sister (hopefully) and I will try and make a few things for my girls as well as the usual plastic stuff! lol. Men are hard to cater for whether you are making or buying i find!
Glad you liked the name Fred or Freddie he/she just seem to look a Fred to me!
Have a great weekend Suzie.
MBB x
I am loving the handmade christmas idea and would love to get one of your birdies as a pressie so i am sure your family will be really happy. Say hi to Freddie for me - he looks so cute.
ReplyDeleteI must start thinking of Christmas early, I don't like to but I promised to make things for a craft stall this year!
ReplyDeleteJulie xxxx
I have to agree with you full heartedly. I made all my presents last year as I took part in Tif's Utmost Challenge. It is harder for my teenage boys though who much prefer commercialism to handmade!
ReplyDeleteI bought the book that Floss recommends last year... will get it out and start reading it earlier this year so I can put more things into practice.
I love the birds you are making. I think receiving a handmade gift is far more precious.
I'd say you are well on your way for Christmas....yikes I just wrote down THAT word!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks Suzie!
Jim
Hi Susie,
ReplyDeleteYes that's definately the spirit! very impressed by your crafty ~ thrifty resolution.
As for white rabbits I am always blurting it out!
Love Sarah x
He He Suzie when I say " A pinch and a punch for the first if the month - and NO returns " Joe says, " A punch and a kick for being so quick - and no returns " We've always done it but I have no idea where it came from !
ReplyDeletefred...now thats a great name!
ReplyDeletelove the birds, i make something similar and put lavender in them as well.
heres to an old fashioned home made christmas.
xxrosey
Hi sweetie pie, Now you have done something I didn't thnk would be possible this year. I can actually say I think I can enjoy the holidays in spite of losing my son so close to them. Bringing back the real meaning and keeping my hands busy creating little handmade treausres for my special friends will give me a happy reason to celebrate. Love you and your little birdies so much, Mollye
ReplyDeleteFirst, I want to thank you for the kind comment you left on my "re-dedicate" blog post. I know that you do understand -- and you well know how rare that is, so I wanted to say that I treasure your support and understanding. It is a difficult, off-balance time for me right now. So thanks.
ReplyDeleteI am right there with you about Christmas. While I enjoy the hustle and bustle of Christmas, I have come to note that it is all about spending money. I would like to turn the hustle and bustle into baking and creating and writing lovely notes, etc. For the past several years, my family has resorted to merely asking for a list of "ideas" for gifts and then getting exactly that. Well, we could all shop for ourselves, then, and save everyone the trouble. It has gotten so far from what Christmas is supposed to be about. I try very hard to teach my son that he should every single gift he gets -- every single one -- because gifts are not about getting what YOU want, but it is about getting something that the giver wanted you to have. What ever happened to that concept.
So to get to your question about men -- they are difficult, aren't they -- I pose my question to you: The man you have in mind, one at a time, what would YOU like him to have? A warm pair of slippers? A warmer pair of gloves? What about microwavable handwarmers?
Your little Freddie is just precious and so cheerful. And those birdies are lovely -- and will bring such cheer.
Happy Holidays, and thank you again -- I feel lucky to have stumbled upon your blog.
hi susie. thank you so much for praying for lanie and her family. just the thought of helping them means a lot already. your prayers are very much appreciated. thank you, susie. God bless you and yours.
ReplyDeleteWonderful post, Suzie! We are actually going to try and do the same thing this year - make (or purchase handmade) gifts for mostly everything this year. It will save money - and I think it will mean something very special as well. :) Theresa
ReplyDeleteGood gracious girly, you are like a breath of fresh air in the autumn. I love the way you kick around leaves and talk of headless chickens!
ReplyDeleteWell, as you know. I'm working at Michaels craft store for this holiday season. People are already flocking in the doors to buy and buy. To me, that is a good thing. In America I hope we are doing a turn around. More people due to our economy and all that mess are making crafts. It's profitable for the craft world but more profitable for those that give and receive.
I am totally with you. It's healthy to get back to basic's and pull out the knitting basket or paint brushes. I know I'll be making my gifts this year and for those men...hmmm...that's the real test!
Ceramic/pottery coffee mugs
Knitted scarves/socks
Chair pads for their computer chair?
Lavender soap (most men love it)
Make his childhood photo album
One time I transformed a clock for my honey...put Super Hero decals on it...
Gosh...that's my best offerings.
Hope you and the chickens like it!
I'm not going to have time this year to amke things but equally I don't really have anything I want either. We have a small family and have agreed with friends that we won't buy for each other this year with so many babies on the way!
ReplyDeleteI would be just as happy to receive a handmade gift as an expensive shop bought one!
I have no ideas for handmade gifts for men, but know that violet posy is running thrifty Christmas over at her web site with some great ideas.
ReplyDeleteI much prefer handmade and that is what people get in this house!
Hello you... I have been having lots of fun tending your farm! lol anyway... I am also on a hand crafted quest and I have even bought some white minature daffodils that I have planted up in jam jars with chrochet'd covers and they are scented and white and will hopefully be in flower by Christmas... I must go and get some more! other than that I am crocheting hats, scarves, and scented stuffed bits and bobs.. christmas baubles and amigurumi animals... for my nieces and nephew I will be buying 3 of those flexible buckets and lining them with fabric and then popping things in like sketch books and pencils etc as 2 of them are doing art related subjects at college... its all prety much going ot be low key and hand made...
ReplyDeletelove the birdies...
x Alex
What a delightful post, I think is is lovely to receive a handmade gift too! I have been busy but not as busy as you! The birs are sweet but my fave is the doggie, adorable!
ReplyDeleteHI SWEET SUSIE!

(DID I SPELL IT RIGHT?)LOL
ANYWAY... I WILL BE MAKING CHRISTMAS GIFTS TOO!
AND I ALSO WANT TO START MAKING BIRTHDAY GIFTS!
HAVING 3 CHILDREN... THEY ARE ALWAYS BEEN INVITED TO BIRTHDAY PARTIES... SO MY GOAL ITS TO START MAKING HAND MADE GIFTS!
I`M LOOKING FORWARD TO SEE MORE OF YOUR GIFTS... FOR INSPIRATION!
TAKE CARE,
DEBBIE MOSS
Lovely lovely post. Me, I can't get enough of Christmas but even I was disappointed a couple of weeks ago that the seasonal aisle in Tescos was full of Christmas already and not a halloween fang or witch's hat in sight. All the tins of Quality Street and boxes of biscuits were half price because they would have been out of date before Christmas! It seems to get earlier every year. Anyway, I am all for making as much as I can as well and this means we have to start early because there is lots to make so yes, some things do need to be out there early. I'm planning to make crystal snowflakes that can be hung on the tree attached to hand made tags on the front of my Christmas cards ... a sort of card/tag and pressie all in one. I went to Wyevale garden centre today ... the Christmas decorations were going up and the trees were already there ...
ReplyDeleteLove ya blog Susie xoxo
I'm all about the handmade Christmas....I will be starting to make stuff for my family very soon for my family~ There's nothing like handmade. Love your bird idea. I saw a women who was making squares and filling them with lavender and then she said you could put them in the dryer with the laundry and it would leave a wonderful smell with your clothes. I am going to try this might be a good idea as a gift a dryer sachet ~I enjoyed your post Heather
ReplyDeletehear, hear, completely agree with you!!...oh but now you've also made me want a candy apple!!
ReplyDeleteHandmade gift for a man?!?! That is tricky! I would recommend browsing Etsy for inspiration. I think it is fantastic that you are going to make your gifts this year. My family discussed gift giving years ago and we no longer exchange gifts, but simply enjoy each others company. Of course the children still receive gifts!
ReplyDeleteHello Suzie Dear, I share your longing for a simple Christmas where gifts are maybe fewer-but are handmade and as much a gift of the giver as the gift itself-just from the fact that someone made it-with time and love. Amy and I are going to try to hand-make our gifts this year. We both like to sew, and she is a good little knitter too. We also plan to give our home made jam and jelly to a few people.
ReplyDeleteI love your little birds-they are so sweet, and lucky are those who receive them.
No pumpkins here either-is it just a plot to commercialize one more thing by making us have to buy them LOL!
In any case-Happy Fall!
I just don't think men and handmade go. Tis a very tricky one indeed and I've not had any luck in the past. Perhaps some handmade sweets like mince tarts, truffles, cakes etc? They usually like an edible.
ReplyDeleteI also spend weeks working on handmade gifts for my friends and family. They do appreciate it but golly it takes sooo long. I usually do mostly handmade mixed in with some bought.
